CHENNAI: India auto major Bajaj Auto announced on Friday that it has started production of the most powerful motorcycle it has attempted to produce, equipped with a 400 cc engine. Bajaj is planning to launch the premium category product around the middle of next month. The company still remains one of the largest motorcycle producers in India with the highly competitive Pulsar range remaining a market leader in the 150 cc plus category. The launch of a 400 cc motorcycle is set to change the dynamics of its portfolio. According to sources, the new motorcycle is also likely to be part of the Pulsar range. “We are proud to announce this historic roll out at Chakan with our all women assembly line. Our new bike will set new benchmarks in its segment,” Bajaj Auto President (Motorcycle Business) Eric Vas said. However, sources say that the bike will be the Pulsar CS400 cruiser, though the actual release name of the bike is not yet clear. It is likely to be priced around the `1.5 plus range. The Pulsar CS400 was first showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo as a concept model. The new bike is likely to be a gamechanger, even if it differs significantly in features from the version showcased in 2014, because its entry will throw wide open the high category segments. For now, the only dominant player in the 300 cc plus segment continues to be the Royal Enfield, though international motorcycle makers have begun to enter the market to cater to increasing demand.

Showcased in 2014, the bike is likely to boast a 375cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine, a maximum torque of around 33 Nm and max power around 35PS.
