HYDERABAD: Vehicular traffic came to a standstill in many parts of Hyderabad this evening, after heavy downpour lashed the city in the afternoon. Several areas were waterlogged resulting in overflow of drains causing inconvenience to the citizens. Hundreds of vehicles were moving at snail’s pace on main roads due to overflow of rainwater adding to the woes of the commuters.
Routes on Secretariat, Lakadi-ka-pul, Khairtabad, Punjagutta, Ameerpet, Begumpet, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, parts of Hitec City and Gachibowli besides several other areas witnessed heavy traffic jams. Meanwhile, Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahendar Reddy directed all police personnel of law and order police stations to come out on the street and assist traffic police in clearing traffic snarls caused by heavy rains. According to Y K Reddy, director (in-charge), IMD Hyderabad, an upper air circulation persisting over Telangana and Vidarbha triggered these rains. “While the circulation is slowly moving westwards, it will bring more rain over the city for the next two days. Also, there are chances that there might be isolated spells of heavy rainfall over the city,”
According to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation officials, due to heavy downpour in Balanagar, the drains overflew and water entered into the low lying houses resulting in collapse of one side wall of a house, however, no one was injured in the incident.
